Aptitude tests

Like many employers, the NZDF uses tests as part of their selection process. The tests provide us with information about how you might perform in a particular job. This helps us place you into jobs that match your abilities. Most people are naturally nervous about tests so to introduce you to these tests and help you to prepare for them follow the links below.

Examples of the aptitude tests can be found below.

What sort of tests will you have to sit?

There are four tests in the NZDF recruiting test series, but you may have to sit only some of these, depending on your choice of trade and service. If you have sat any of the tests before, tell the recruiter, as you may not have to sit them again.

The sample questions will be similar to those featured in the tests. You should find a quiet place - free from noise or interruption, and work through this handout.

Read all the instructions carefully before you attempt each practice test. Work through each one as quickly and accurately as you can. Try to answer all the questions within the time limit given; this will give you an idea of how well you cope under time pressure.

This practice before the real tests will give you a general idea of the types of questions that will be asked. If you find that you struggle with the questions, you may need to check out other sources such as revision books, teachers, and peers.

What can you do to prepare for the test session?

Between now and the test session:

Revise your school algebra and trigonometry.

Do word and number puzzles, and simple crosswords.

Practise with lots of examples, but don't use a calculator.

When practising, set yourself time limits.

Immediately Before the test session:

Get plenty of sleep the night before.

Find out exactly where the test venue is and check what time you have to be there.

Give yourself plenty of time to get to the venue.

What to do during the test session?

At the test session:

Listen carefully to the instructions.

If you are unsure about any of the instructions, ask questions.

Before the first test is given, you will be required to fill in a sheet giving your permission for information (including test results) to be used by NZDF personnel.

On the top of each answer sheet you will be required to record your name, age, the date of testing, and the trade you are applying for.

Read each of the questions carefully before answering.

Because each test has a time limit, work quickly and accurately.

If you cannot answer a question, leave it and go on to the next one.

You are not allowed to use a calculator.

You don't need to bring anything to do the tests as all materials, pencils and paper, will be provided.

Your test results will be confidential.

The recruiter will tell you how you performed on the tests.
