Learning, Training & Development

Training is a key component of the NZDF.  Roles we have include Planning and Scheduling Coordinator, Training Resource Coordinator, Adult Learning Tutor, Learning Designer and Developer; and a wide variety of Instructors.

Meet Kyle Rika, a Planning & Scheduling Coordinator at the Defence College in Devonport.

“I’m a Planning and Scheduling Coordinator based in the Leadership Development Group at the Devonport Naval Base in Auckland. I plan, schedule and resource courses such as the Junior Officer Common Training, Divisional Management course, Leading Rate Common Promotion courses and Petty Officer Common Promotion courses.

Working alongside the directing staff, I plan and schedule courses for Devonport Naval Base. This usually requires me to liaise with instructors both internally and externally as part of this planning to ensure that the timetable works for all stakeholders. There is also a certain amount of resourcing that I will task for each course (booking classrooms and other resources required for the course), I also work with a Training Resource Coordinator who does the bulk of the resourcing.

This role is great because it’s giving me experience in a different environment with an organisation that maintains its core values. One of the best things for me is the strong culture that exists between military and civilian staff, something that is unique and makes work enjoyable.”
