As a Dental Officer in the New Zealand Army, you will provide general dental clinical services to military personnel.
Your role will involve the effective provision of quality dental practice contributing to the provision of efficient and effective dental health services to patients, and providing clinical supervision and instruction to any assigned dental staff.
Dental teams are deployed overseas to support New Zealand Defence Force personnel on operational missions, some of which have been East Timor and Bougainville.
As a Dental Officer in the New Zealand Army, you will be able to take your existing skills to the next level. The comprehensive training you will receive as an Officer will allow you to effectively lead teams, in all kinds of situations. You will be taught how to handle weapons, and receive adventure and outdoor training. There are also opportunities to further your professional development and the possibility of further tertiary study.

Your initial remuneration will be based on previous experience and skill level. This is negotiated on a case by case basis. As your career continues, remuneration will increase on promotion and seniority.
- You must be at least 17 years of age
- Meet the citizenship & security requirements to gain SV security clearance for this trade.
Qualified Dentist, registered with the Dental Council of NZ (or in final year of dental studies).
- You must be medically fit for service.
- Colour perception restrictions may apply.
SPECIALIST OFFICER INDUCTION COURSE
Upon successful enlistment into the Army you will be posted to Waiouru Army base. Here you will do a six week specialist officer military training course to teach you the basics of being in the Army. The course is designed to assist you in your integration into the Army and although it is challenging, it’s specifically catered for specialist officers. You will be taught the basics including:
- Weapon handling
- Drill and barrack routine
- Living in the field
- Army Ethos and Values
There are opportunities to further your professional development and tertiary study.
After initial employment and training the NZ Army will provide funding and study leave for Dental Officers to complete further professional study for a number of different courses including post graduate clinical doctorates and diplomas.
Your first posting will be to wherever the RNZDC most needs you. Unlike many other corps the RNZDC is tri-service, so you can be posted to a Navy, Army or Air Force Dental Team location.
