As a Officer in the Royal New Zealand Air Force Police, you will serve as part of the broader New Zealand Defence Force Military Police (MP) delivering a variety of policing, security and investigative outputs on camps and bases within New Zealand and on exercises and deployments overseas.
Requirements
Basics
- Must be 18 years old by the time you graduate from recruit course.
- Eligible to meet national security clearance criteria, as stipulated by the Government's Protective Security Requirements.
- Pass a Selection Board.
- NZ Class 1 Full Driver Licence with no traffic convictions.
Education
Minimum: NCEA Level 2 certificate.

Job on Base
From the very start of your new career you will be on the job, leading and managing Military
Police personnel from all three Services – Naval Police (NP), Royal New Zealand Military
Police (RNZMP) and RNZAF Police (RNZAF POL).
As part of the ‘Police the Force’ role you will be responsible for the delivery of general
policing, security and investigative functions across camps and bases within New Zealand.
It is a role that will require you to think critically and challenge you mentally and physically.
You will need to be motivated and trustworthy as a high level of responsibility is placed on
you. -
Job on Deployment
Military Police provide the NZDF with a variety of additional ‘Police for the Mission’ tactical
policing activities, including Mobility and Manoeuvre Support, Tactical Site Exploitation,
Captured Persons and Close Protection.
Whilst deployed on operations or exercises, your role will be to advise command and
coordinate the delivery of the required policing effects.

01Job Training
Job Training
After Initial Officer Training you will be posted to Headquarters Joint Military Police Unit (JMPU) in Trentham Military Camp where you will learn more about the Unit, its role and how the Headquarters works. From there you will travel to Australia to undertake 16 weeks of specialist Military Police training at the Australian Defence Force School of Military Policing at Holsworthy Barracks, Sydney. Upon return to New Zealand, you will be required to qualify in Defence Tactics, Urgent Duty Driving and Military Justice.
Upon completion of training, you can expect to take up a position as an Area Commander within the JMPU Provost Squadron, or as a Training Platoon Commander at the Joint Military Police School.
02Ongoing Training
Ongoing Training
As your career progresses you can expect to undertake Intermediate and Advanced MP training at the ADF Defence School of Policing as well as advanced organisational leadership training here in New Zealand.
03Specialist Training
Specialist Training
MP have two specialist streams - Serious Investigations and Close Protection. Other training includes the Coordinated Incident Manager System, Disaster Victim Identification, Mortuary Affairs, Range Conducting Officer and Advanced Instructor. This could see you undertaking additional training at JMPS, or with NZ Police, ADF MP or NATO MP.
