The Defence Force offers young people many different careers and lifestyle options. From doctors, lawyers and psychologists to engineers, mechanics and musicians, we are unrivalled in our professional diversity. From Army camps in New Zealand to ships in the Asia Pacific, we travel many places and experience unique situations. The Defence Force makes a positive difference to the world and protects New Zealand against security threats. We also assist with peacekeeping and humanitarian missions. What’s more, we have careers to suit every level of education. Graduates are encouraged to pursue officer roles, whilst we have roles that are suitable for sports-focused kids and those seeking to learn a trade.
Training is first-class. Not only do we provide all new starters with a comprehensive introduction to our unique culture, but with ongoing support we provide them with the knowledge and skills they need to excel in their chosen career. This can be a mixture of on-the-job training and structured courses both in New Zealand and overseas.
We actively encourage our personnel to pursue academic and professional qualifications. We even sponsor a select number of graduates every year, which enables them to gain a degree without gaining a large debt. But all personnel are given time away from their jobs to study. There are incentives to learn, progress, take on additional responsibility and rise through the ranks – the same as in any civilian organisation.
Whether serving in the Navy, Army or Air Force, support is on-hand 24-7 to help personnel stay motivated, focused and above all – happy. This can take the form of professional counselling, spiritual and cultural guidance, or simply via an informal chat with a trusted officer or colleague.
