Navy Salary & Working Conditions

The lifestyle and experiences make a Navy career very rewarding. There is also an excellent salary and benefits package, together with working environments that are modern, well-equipped and comfortable.

Salary

The Navy uses a pay scale that reflects your rank and trade. As you move up the ranks and become more experienced, gaining extra skills and qualifications along the way, your salary will rise too.

On top of your basic salary you can expect something called Military Factor. This provides you with extra financial rewards because of the commitment you’ve made to serve your country – a commitment that asks you to play your part in situations and environments that are unique to military life, such as combat.

When comparing your salary to a civilian career, it is worth remembering that there are many additional benefits in the Navy that will make your money go further:

  • You will receive an accommodation component to your salary to spend how you choose. This gives you the flexibility to rent or buy.

  • Food is often subsidised too, so you could be spending less on living expenses than your friends outside the Navy.

  • Free dental and health care.

  • A superannuation scheme. This is a savings scheme made up of contributions by both you and the Navy. It ensures that as you develop in your career, you are putting money away for the future and earning interest on it at the same time.

Below is an overview of starting salaries, but it’s best to use it as guide to the minimum salary you will receive, as many trades carry additional rewards depending on where you are and what you’re doing.

Navy life

Working conditions vary in the Navy. Life on board a ship is different to life on a Navy base, where there’s more space for things like sporting facilities, libraries and workshops. Even if you are at sea, you will have opportunities to stay fit and relax when you are off-duty – not forgetting ways to stay in touch with your friends and family.
