Stores Accountants in the Navy provide logistical support to ships at sea, and are an essential link in the efficient supply chain between ships and shore. You are responsible for ordering and providing equipment and stores, such as ship parts, clothing, medical supplies, armament and general stores. Stores Accountant enjoy a balance of service at sea, as part of a deployed force overseas and ashore in Naval establishments in New Zealand.
The initial parts of your career are spent ashore in the Naval Supply Depot in Devonport Naval Base with short duration postings to ships to gain experience and consolidate. These can be supplemented with short term postings to other locations in New Zealand as well overseas experiences with Defence Force deployed forces and exchanges with other Navies.
In addition, whilst serving on a ship, you will take part in various functions as part of the ship’s communal effort. This can be as varied as carrying out damage control activities, being part of a boarding team, general seamanship activities, domestic cleanliness duties, storing, and ammunition handling – just to name a few.
As you gain experience and rank, there will be further opportunities to post back to sea for supervisory positions in the Stores Accountant role.
Your hard work, experience, and training accomplishments as an Stores Accountant are rewarded by promotions in rank and salary. Following your initial training and consolidation, you can reasonably be expected to have attained a basic level of competence within 18 months of joining. This will be supplemented by a sea posting and then further training to prepare you for promotion to a supervisory role.
Advanced training will involve both generic leadership skills and stores accountant skills. Successful completion of these will qualify you for a promotion to Leading Hand whereby you will be responsible for supervising a team of Stores Accountants, either at sea or ashore.

While undertaking Basic Recruit Course you will be paid as a Recruit (see attached pay table). On completion of your Recruit Course you will be paid as an Ordinary Rate and your pay will continue to increase as your career progresses.
Upon successful enlistment into the Navy you will be posted to Devonport Navy base in Auckland. Here you will do 13 weeks of basic military training to find out if you’ve got what it takes to be in the Navy, and learn various subjects including:
You will start your career with initial and professional training and will be employed at sea and ashore with opportunities to deploy to New Zealand Defence Force peacekeeping commitments overseas. You will liaise with provedores and ships agents in foreign ports, complete inventories and stock takes and act as logistical support in ports such as Singapore, Australia, and around New Zealand.
Further courses, training and promotions are provided as part of your career progression and you will gain several civilian qualifications including SAP Inventory Management and Hazardous Substances handling. Opportunities exist to post overseas to perform specialist tasks in a variety of locations including land based peacekeeping missions.
As your career progresses, you will undertake further training to develop your generic leadership skills and specialist skills. The ability to manage people effectively and efficient is a key part of your development. This training will provide you with additional skills and expertise to assist with your career progression.
