As a member of the Aviation Refueller trade, you’ll be required to receipt aviation fuel into base bulk storage tanks, perform fuel quality control and testing tasks, and deliver aviation fuel into a range of RNZAF and visiting aircraft.
You will perform the same tasks away from base when deployed in support of RNZAF aircraft operating anywhere in New Zealand or overseas.
Driving light and heavy vehicles will be part of your daily activities, and you will be required to perform some minor first line motor vehicle servicing and valet tasks.
The minimum remuneration you will be paid from your enlistment is $35,694. Your remuneration will increase upon graduation of your recruit course to $42,487 and will continue to increase on promotion and seniority.
You must be 17 years or older.
Restricted Class 1 Manual Licence essential, Full Class 1 preferred.
You must have a minimum of 12 NCEA Level 1 credits in English and Mathematics.
Upon successful enlistment into the Air Force you’ll be posted to RNZAF Base Woodbourne (near Blenheim). Here you’ll do 12 weeks of basic military training to find out if you’ve got what it takes to be in the Air force, and learn various subjects including:
Organisation and Administration
RNZAF Customs and Protocol
Drill and Parades
Military Field Skills and Weapon Training
First Aid, and Search and Rescue Techniques
Physical Fitness.
You’ll then spend about six months completing specialist driving courses to obtain driving licence classes and endorsements to drive a wide range of vehicles and gain a wide range of driving skills. Once this primary trade training is complete, you will be posted to a base where over the next 24 months you will begin your training in aviation refuelling.
The first step in this process is learning how to operate the Deployable Bulk Fuelling Installation – the equipment set up in remote locations to supply aviation fuel to aircraft. This training is delivered via a five-week course that covers fuel handling and testing, operation of the equipment, emergency procedures, and set-up and breakdown of the deployable installation.
